Esophageal cancer

Nine out of ten tumors of the esophagus are malignant tumors of the esophageal mucosa (esophageal cancer). Unfortunately, this form of cancer is particularly insidious, and therefore most often diagnosed too late when the tumor spreads to the esophagus, and heal the sick is no longer possible. Esophageal cancer – one of the cancers with the most dismal prognosis, ie, cancer of the esophagus the likelihood of recovery is negligible. The first symptoms of the disease are likely to be a violation of swallowing and blood in the saliva. Men suffer from cancer of the esophagus is approximately four times more often than women.

  • Foreign body sensation.
  • Swallowing disturbances.
  • Saliva with blood.
  • Emaciation.

The cause of esophageal cancer, as well as (bronchogenic) of lung cancer – smoking. However, apart from smoking influenced the abuse of alcoholic beverages, hot meal and hot drinks. It is proved that for a constant irritation of the mucous membrane of the esophagus the likelihood of cancer increases dramatically. In addition, esophageal cancer is often observed as a result of single lesions, such as burns of the esophagus with alkalis or acids.

Unfortunately, treatment options are worthless, esophageal cancer is usually diagnosed too late. Typically, a cancer hospital being treated with ionizing radiation, chemotherapy is used, at least – surgery. Of course, if the cancer is diagnosed early, the likelihood of recovery more.

There are ways to reduce the likelihood of esophageal cancer – do not abuse alcohol or cigarettes. Also, do not take very hot foods and very hot drinks.

The first, doctor examines the structure of the esophagus, to determine whether there are any irregularities. He then gives the patient to drink barium suspension – radiopaque substance that helps to better see the lumen of the esophagus on the screen. Then usually performed endoscopy – an endoscope is inserted into the esophagus, through which the doctor can examine the esophagus, and at the same time taking tissue samples for analysis. After the diagnosis of cancer, the doctor must find out whether metastases. If metastases are found, it is hoped that after the removal of the tumor the patient will recover.

Course of the disease

Unfortunately, the symptoms of esophageal cancer occur only when the disease is in advanced stage. Therefore, the forecast for esophageal cancer is very poor – a hope for recovery is negligible. On average, physicians can treat only 10% of patients with this diagnosis. Often the use of all means of treatment is aimed only at ensuring the patency of the esophagus. The primary method of treatment – radiation therapy, but a cancerous tissue “cut” and the laser beams.

Is this cancer dangerous?

This type of cancer is extremely dangerous because it is diagnosed late, and often is fatal.

Cancer of the esophagus is a heavy and often too late diagnosed disease. If you have mentioned symptoms should seek medical attention to determine their causes.
