Chronic bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes. Bronchi branch into the bronchioles, alveoli that end, in which the metabolism occurs between the inhaled air and the blood: the human body absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide. There are small cilia (ciliated epithelium) on the bronchial mucosa. Being in constant motion, they remove dust and other foreign particles from the lung. If the movement of the cilia is broken because of the large amount of mucus or smoke, this mechanism does not work. During exacerbation of the disease scars appear on the bronchi, they are deformed in some places. They are non-elastic, this factor makes breathing difficult.

  • Gradually increased cough.
  • At first, sputum is transparent (like glass), and in severe cases – purulent.
  • Rales are heard when breathing.
  • Shortness of breath.

The main cause of chronic bronchitis – a long smoking. In addition, the incidence is higher in those areas where the air is very dirty, it suffers from the disease every tenth person. Dust and chemicals in the areas also contribute to bronchitis, for example, adverse conditions in textile, wool and tobacco factories. However, chronic bronchitis can also be a consequence of other diseases (e.g., pulmonary or bronchial asthma) as well as a portion of subcooled body. The disease is characterized by seasonality: it intensifies in the spring and fall when the temperature and humidity change. Seasonal changes the body occurs at this time.

It is necessary to thin out the mucus drugs that stimulate coughing. To facilitate breathing bronchodilators are appointed. Inhalation, breathing exercises, as well as hardening of the body are effective treatments. Sometimes bronchial lavage and treatment with antibiotics are prescribed.

If you smoke, you must quit. You can not abuse alcohol – it makes the impact of the disease. In addition, release excess weight.

The main symptom of the disease – shortness of breath. Other disturbing symptoms: cough does not go away a few weeks, yellowish or bloody sputum. If the patient is quickly suffocated, there is side or chest pain when breathing, then a visit to the doctor is absolutely necessary.

The doctor examines the patient, perform the analysis, establish a diagnosis and prescribe treatment.

Treatment of the resorts with a mild climate has a good effect in the treatment of chronic bronchitis. Pulmonologist will give you more information about it.

Course of the disease

The disease begins with so-called “smoker’s cough”. But soon the cough increases, especially during exercise or when hit from a warm house in the cold. First, the mucus is whitish, later becoming yellowish or bloody. The patient begins to choke; there is headache, impaired cardiac function pain in the chest and abdomen (from frequent cough). The body temperature often remains normal, so the onset of the disease can be missed.

Bronchitis reduces the body’s resistance, susceptibility to various diseases increased. Lung tissue may be changed, covered with scars, hypoxia develops. Asthma may also occur.
