Achilles tendonitis

Achilles tendon connects the muscles of shin and calcaneus. If there is too large loading on Achilles tendon, Achilles tendonitis is possible.

Inflammation often affects not only the tendon, but the mucous bag, located between the Achilles tendon and calcaneus.

An ordinary symptom of Achilles tendonitis – pains in a heel during loading. A tendon can become swollen or turn red. It is possible to alleviate the pain, unbending a foot downward. At very strong inflammation a person cannot walk.


  • Pain in the heel.
  • Thickening and reddening of the Achilles tendon.
  • Inability to the movement.


Achilles tendonitis is ordinary arises up, a person wear uncomfortable shoes for a long time. It is also characteristic for sportsmen and dancers, on the feet of which there is the large loading. Other cause of Achilles tendonitis – a metabolic disturbance. At the increase of concentration of fats or cholesterol in blood, and also at the gout the sharp inflammation develops due to deposit of urate microcrystals in in body tissues. Heel pain may also occur due to other foot diseases, such as bone or joint disease, heel spur or inflammation of vault of foot.


First of all, it is necessary to provide the foot rest. A patient needs the bed mode, and for immobilization of foot a gipseous or tight bandage is used. When the inflammation is insignificant, the ointment bandage is usually enough.

At heel pain gentle massage and moist warm compresses are recommended. It is important to protect the injured foot, to go in for sport is contra-indicated.

At the strong swelling of foot, long pains and difficulty in a movement it is necessary to appeal to the doctor.

First of all, the doctor will conduct the close-up of foot, will make an X-ray. If it is the Achilles tendonitis, a doctor will appoint anesthetic and anti-inflammatory medications as injections which are entered near-by a tendon, or as pills. If the inflammation becomes chronic, the patient sometimes has to wear special orthopedic shoes with a slightly enlarged heel. If severe inflammation destroys the tissue of the Achilles tendon, the delete of the lost tissues is executed by an operation.

Course of the disease

Achilles tendonitis can be acute or chronic. At proper treatment the acute Achilles tendonitis usually passes quickly. At chronic Achilles tendonitis the symptoms are recurrent, therefore permanent treatment is required.

Achilles tendonitis does not present a danger for life. However it must be treated, otherwise the patient will suffer from permanent great pains.

Achilles tendonitis often affects the sportsmen. After the carried inflammation it is important gradually to increase the physical loading on a foot – the only way to avoid complications.
